YouTube does not specify official text size numbers for thumbnails. The sizes here are based on real-world testing across mobile (thumbnails render at roughly 160 px wide) and desktop (roughly 360 px wide).
Recommended text sizes by canvas
| Canvas | Title (main) | Subtitle | Word count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 | 80-120 px | 40-60 px | Title 3-6 words, subtitle 5-10 words |
| 1920 × 1080 | 120-180 px | 60-90 px | Same proportions |
These are canvas pixels, not screen pixels. Because thumbnails are heavily scaled down in the feed, text needs to be much larger than you might expect on the canvas.
Why so large?
On the YouTube mobile app's home screen, thumbnails shrink to about 160 px wide. An 80 px title on a 1280 px canvas becomes roughly 10 px on screen. Anything smaller turns into an unreadable blur. What looks "too big" on the canvas is actually just right in the feed.
Choosing a font
Bold sans-serif fonts work best. Thin or decorative fonts lose their strokes when scaled down. The YouTube Thumbnail Maker includes 16 built-in fonts optimized for thumbnails. Try different options with the Font Preview tool.
Text color and contrast
Light background? Use dark text. Dark background? Use white text. When the background is busy (photo behind text), add a stroke (outline) or drop shadow so the text does not blend in. Set the stroke color opposite to the text brightness (white text → black stroke).
Text placement
Avoid the bottom-right corner where the video duration badge overlaps. Top-left or center is safest. If there is a face in the thumbnail, place text on the opposite side for a natural look.
Checklist
- Is your title text at least 80 px (on a 1280×720 canvas)?
- Is the title 3-6 words or fewer?
- Are you using a bold sans-serif font?
- Is there enough contrast between text and background?
- Did you avoid the bottom-right corner (duration badge area)?
- Does the text remain readable when you shrink the image to phone size?
FAQ
What pixel size should YouTube thumbnail title text be?
On a 1280×720 canvas, title text should be 80-120 px and subtitles 40-60 px to remain readable on mobile.
How many words fit on a YouTube thumbnail?
Keep it to 3-6 words for the title. More words mean smaller text, which becomes unreadable on mobile.
Do I need a text outline or stroke?
Not always, but when the background is busy (like a photo), adding a stroke or drop shadow keeps the text from blending into the background.
