The three pieces and their sizes
| Item | Size | Where it shows |
|---|---|---|

| Banner | 2560×1440px recommended, minimum 2048×1152, 6 MB or less | Top of the channel page; cropped differently on TV, desktop and mobile |
| Video thumbnail | 1280×720 (16:9), minimum 640px wide, 2 MB mobile / 50 MB desktop | Feeds, search, suggestions |

Step 1: decide your colors and font
Before you design anything, pick two or three colors and one or two fonts. If you already have a photo or logo you like, pull its colors with Color Palette from Image and write down the hex codes. Using the same set everywhere is what makes a small channel look professional.
Step 2: profile picture
The icon is tiny and circular, so keep it simple: your face, or a logo made of one shape or initials. Anything near the corners is cut off by the circle, so keep the subject inside the central 70–80%. You can make a simple mark in the Logo Maker.
Step 3: banner
The banner is shown full width on TVs but heavily cropped on phones. Put your channel name and the one-line promise (what viewers get and how often) inside the central safe area; use the edges only for background. The YouTube Banner Maker shows the safe area for you.
Step 4: a thumbnail template
Make one thumbnail layout and reuse it: same font, same text position, same color band. Change only the photo and the words each time. In the YouTube Thumbnail Maker, save your first design and duplicate it for the next video.
Good vs. bad
- Good: icon, banner and thumbnails share the same colors and font.
- Bad: every video uses a different style, so the channel never feels recognizable.
- Good: banner text inside the central safe area.
- Bad: channel name at the far left, cut off on phones.
Common mistakes
- Putting small text in the profile picture; it is unreadable at 98px.
- Designing the banner only on a desktop preview and never checking mobile.
- Spending hours on channel art before the first video. A simple, consistent set is enough to start; improve it later.

- Profile picture square, subject in the center, no small text?
- Banner 2560×1440 (at least 2048×1152) with key text in the safe area?

FAQ
What size should a YouTube profile picture be?
Upload a square image. YouTube displays it as a 98×98px circle, so a square of 800×800 or so gives plenty of detail. Files can be up to 15 MB.
Why is my banner cut off on my phone?
YouTube crops the banner differently on each device. Only the central safe area is visible everywhere, so keep your channel name and key text there.
Do I need a logo to start a channel?
No. A clear photo of your face works well as an icon. A logo helps if the channel is about a brand or topic rather than a person.
